#AutismAwarenessMonth
Continuing the conversation of Autism Awareness, we wanted to help you understand the importance of having a sensory safe space for individuals with autism. How does a sensory space help? It can provide a place for an individual to retreat where they can calmly regain control of their environment. A sensory space can also provide a low-stress environment for an individual where they can work through their reactions to a variety of overwhelming stimuli (ie: lights, sounds, textures, etc.).
A sensory safe space may be a designated area within a room or it can be an entire room; whatever the case, the arrangement of a sensory space should be customized to the specific needs of the autistic individual. Each individual on the spectrum has different needs than the next, but there are universal items that can be helpful with sensory processing — weighted blankets, aromatherapy diffusers, sound machines, dim lighting, and comfortable seating like a bean bag.
